DATE: 15 July 2013

CASE NO. 2013GO05

CLIENTS: Amber, age 30, Paul, age 27

PRIMARY BEHAVIOR TYPE: Incest, Swinging

CLIENT’S CONCERNS: Emotional stress

CONTEXT SUMMARY: Amber (age 30 at time of first visit) and her brother Paul (age 27) are an ethnically white couple that have been living together in an incestuous relationship for the past 9 years. They began incestuous relations when Amber was in the 11th grade of highschool and Paul was in 8th grade. They have had two children together (a boy, Sam, 11, and a girl, Amy, 8). Both children are healthy, but Sam has been diagnosed borderline autistic.

Amber, 5’5″, 128 lbs, is attractive with wavy brunette hair and brown eyes. Sprightly, even feisty, and assertive, she is pursuing a degree in English Literature. Paul, 5’8″, 161 lbs, has a muscular build, brown hair, brown eyes. He is relaxed, easy-going, taciturn. With a degree in Computer Science, he is employed as a programmer.

In an effort to resolve relationship stresses, and to introduce renewed erotic excitement into their relationship, the couple have taken up alternative lifestyle sexual recreation in the form of Swinging. However, this has raised other issues. Relations with other family members also present problems. And especially, because of their parentage of children from incest, there is an incessant background worry over legal jeopardy.

This array of psycho-emotional stresses has prompted Amber and Paul to seek professional counseling and guidance.

SESSION SUMMARY:

In response to questions, Amber and Paul indicated they had been emotionally very close as children and this had evolved into erotic interest in mid-adolescence. They both acknowledge that Amber had initiated their incestuous sexual activity, and they had engaged in this clandestinely until Paul graduated from public school. They both entered college at [university], where they began to live together as boyfriend and girlfriend.

Amber also disclosed that she had engaged in incest with her father from about the age of 13, roughly a year after her mother died following a long struggle with pancreatic cancer. Amber has continued her incestuous relationship during occasional visits with her father. She insists the relationship has been consensual. Paul has known about Amber’s incest with her father, and, while he is somewhat uncomfortable with it, he tolerates it.

However, their father is not comfortable with the relationship between Amber and Paul. Amber attributes this to jealousy, but she says her father expresses concern that his son and daughter’s cohabitation and parentage of children by incest may raise questions and attract the attention of law enforcement.

The couple’s children have not been told that their parents are siblings, but it’s possible this is suspected, particularly by Amy. The couple have not changed their names, and have managed to avoid any questions as to why they have the same surname when they are not married. Paul is simply presented as Amber’s boyfriend. Amber is registered as mother of both children, but the father is listed as Unknown.

The couple began experimenting with Swinging two years ago as their erotic relationship was seeming to become stale. Amber had an affair with a coworker, and Paul eventually discovered it.

Amber also discloses that she has become aware of a lesbian attraction to other women. At the same time, she feels a desire for erotic activity with other men. She believes she may be bisexual.

Because of these feelings and stresses, Amber suggested that she and Paul experiment with Swinging, and this is so far providing satisfying sexual recreation. The couple prefer to Swing with other incestuous couples, whom they meet via online forums and other venues, but on occasion they will Swing with “normal”, non–incestuous partners. In these cases, they don’t reveal their actual blood relationship, but present themselves as fiancés or even husband-and-wife. Sometimes they present themselves as cousins.

Alternative lifestyle activity, including Swinging, may help reinvigorate relationships, even those involving incest.

Frequently they prefer to Swing with a particular sibling couple, Judy and Kevin. Like Amber, Judy is bisexual, and they enjoy lesbian sexual activity with each other.

Amber finds Kevin highly sexually attractive, and she enjoys “playing” with him. Watching her brother having sex with Judy (as well as other Swinging partners) stimulates her intensely. Paul is puzzled by this, but offers the explanation that “She’s always been really oversexed.” Paul is now comfortable Swinging with Judy, but he often finds it challenging and stressful to meet and Swing with new couples.

During Swinging, partners may be erotically stimulated by seeing each other sexually active with other partners.

Counselor encouraged the couple to continue their alternative lifestyle, perhaps gradually introducing experimentation with other sexual practices to expand variety and maintain excitement. These practices could include: greater ethnic diversity of partners; expanding groups beyond only two couples; including additional males or females; trying more exotic practices such as anal sex or BDSM.

To address worries about legal jeopardy concerning incest, counselor discussed particulars of existing laws and legal requirements, and provided guidance to help Amber and Paul ensure that they avoid mistakes that could make them legally vulnerable.

Amber and Paul will make an effort to keep a written log of their experiences to assist in discussing issues in future sessions.

Swinging can spice up a relationship by introducing more excitement through variety of sexual partners and more exotic sexual activities.
